About

I joined Kingston Universityin 2009, having previously worked for seven years at the Forensic Section of the Department of Psychology at the University of Leicester where I undertook my PhD consisting of several related studies (i) evaluating the specialist policing response to male rape survivors; (ii) examining the incidence of sexual violence in male sex work in London and (iii) the print representation of male rape survivors. In addition, to which I also lectured on sexual violence at the Department of Criminology also at the University of Leicester.

Prior to that, I worked at the Centre for Criminal Justice, Liverpool John Moores University, on research projects on the effectiveness of Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnerships across Liverpool and Merseyside from an executive organisational level through to the 'grass roots' level, and evaluated the Criminal Justice Liaison Officer Programme in Liverpool Prison.

Therefore, I have a varied background in research focusing on criminal justice policy and the impact of prison and community-based resource provisions on recidivism. However, my key research interests on which I have published remain male rape survivors and more recently the hate crime victimisation of trans people. These topics are reflected in my research-led teaching encompassing the study of marginalised, under-researched and underserved gender minorities.

Research

Previously, I evaluated the specialist policing response by Sexual Offences Investigative Technique Officers (SOITs)/Specially Trained Officers (STOs) to male survivors of rape in London, and am internationally published on areas such as policing, male rape and male sex work. I have also consulted on the topic of male rape being addressed in theatre, e.g., 'Finishing Touches' at the Barbican; and film, in the award-winning documentary "One Taxi Ride" about Erick, a male survivor in Mexico, his journey of disclosure to his family and the impact this has on them and the ripple effect on the world around him. I have written about the discrimination experienced by trans people as a result of international penal policies, this topic continues to be a matter of public debate particularly with regard to the accommodation of trans women. More recently, I wrote the first book dedicated to the under-researched subject of hate crime which targets trans people, entitled "Transphobic Hate Crime" and have also contributed to The SAGE Encyclopedia of Trans Studies which is the first of its kind.

Professional practice, knowledge exchange and impact

The underlying motivation for my real world research is to raise awareness about the impact of the crime of rape on male survivors and highlight the necessity of more needs-directed services through publications and practice; such as previously being a member of the Board of Trustees for Survivors UK thus working with them to improve provisions for their service users.

Trans victims of hate crime have also been traditionally overlooked with regard to the impact and complexities involved in responding to this crime. Their experiences having been merged with those of the LGBTQIA + communities and discussed more generally. In addition to which the cultural and ethnic diversity of this gender minority on an international basis has not been reflected in service provisions. This neglect was highlighted in my book 'Transphobic Hate Crime' which was why I was invited by the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC), Montreal, Canada to present a paper on 'Transphobic Hate Crime' at their workshop on Hate Crime at the 28th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Conference, Vienna, Austria.

I was also asked to represent the Institutes of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Programme Network (PNI) on a thematic panel at the 28th Session of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Conference in Vienna, Austria. Which I did, and addressed the UN member states regarding international policy recommendations resultant from the International Centre for the Prevention of Crime (ICPC) Hate Crime Workshop delivered as part of the conference, my particular emphasis was on transphobic hate crime. This enabled the raising of awareness of this particular type of crime, its impact and the challenges of addressing it on a global scale.
