Dr Paul Booth

About

I researched second language vocabulary and language aptitude (memory and language analysis) for my PhD.  Through collaboration with other researchers I have also conducted studies which compare different first language backgrounds in relation to their processing of second language semantics and syntax, and have researched situated learning in an online environment.

I've worked in different institutions: advertising agencies in London and Brussels; language schools in Brussels and London; universities in Nancy, Lyon, and Kingston. I have gained from working with people from different language and cultural backgrounds because it has helped me to understand how people learn, how to work with others and how to be open to new ideas.

Teaching and learning

Research

With funding from Erasmus I undertook a project with Lyon 2 University, France to develop a module, Educational Technologies in Language Teaching, to enhance novice teachers understanding and use of language learning technology. Masters students create English language learning materials and receive feedback from students in other countries about the materials they produce. This project has since grown to include universities in Indonesia and Lithuania and has been disseminated through two peer-reviewed publications and the National Association for the Teaching of English conference 2019.

A visit and collaboration with Grand Valley State University has led to a research project on applied linguistics curriculum design in the USA, China and the UK. The results have informed masters level curricula and were disseminated through a conference presentation at The European Conference on Language Learning 2019 in London.
