About
Dr Shereen Nabhani-Gebara is an Associate Professor of Oncology with a pursuit of excellence in research dedicated to improving healthcare outcomes using technology and addressing health inequalities.
She holds multiple leadership positions within the British Oncology Pharmacy Association where she chairs their research committee and recently founded(2022) and chairs their Equity, Diversity and Inclusion committee. This has increased her sphere of influence allowing her to play a pivotal role in shaping oncology practice and national oncology strategies.
Due to the visibility of her work and influence, She was recently invited to be an associate editor of the BMJ oncology journal.
Her increased visibility, reach and sphere of influence is a testament of her significant track record in delivering research projects and her commitment to improving health and wellbeing outcomes

Research
Dr Nabhani-Gebara is an expert in the evaluation of healthcare innovations. In her EU funded projects, she leads on the needs assessment studies using a mixed method approach to determine stakeholder requirements to support the development of implementation strategies for service improvement and their evaluation through mixed methodologies such as validation, pilot and feasibility studies. The results of these projects have been widely disseminated in multiple Q1 journals with her as lead author. Her success in the first funded project in 2012 led to a succession of funded projects over the past 10 years from national (InnovateUK) and International (FP7 and H2020) funding bodies.
Her expertise also includes evaluating the impact of diversity and intersectionality on the experience of service users. Her recent work includes investigating the experience of cancer survivors from diverse ethnic backgrounds which has been presented at the British Oncology Pharmacy Association. It also includes examining the lack of inclusivity of the national bowel cancer screening programme and it's impact on user adoption. This was followed by experience-based co-design of a novel and inclusive campaign which was piloted earlier this year.

Managing side effects can be an overwhelming experience for oncology patients, they may be unsure of the severity of their symptoms and could be reluctant to contact their healthcare team. Shereen Nabhani-Gebara, PharmD, BCOP, from 重口味SM, London, UK, and her team have developed an app which aims to target this issue. Using this app, patients can look up their symptoms and receive useful information on how to management their symptom and, where necessary, are advised to seek medical attention. Dr Nabhani-Gebara tells us about the positive effect using this app has had on the breast cancer patients so far and believes that it can be effective in other patient groups too. This interview was recorded at the British Oncology Pharmacy Association (BOPA) Annual Symposium 2018, held in Birmingham, UK.
The uptake for bowel cancer screening is relatively low in certain areas with higher deprivation and ethnic diversity, and Dr Nabhani-Gebara discusses the potential reasons behind this. She then reports on a pilot study looking at how community pharmacies can support screening programs, in which people could access information about bowel cancer in their preferred language by scanning a QR code. The trial showed an improvement in knowledge, perception, and intent to engage in the cancer screening program. A survey was sent out to members and 50% of participants indicated that they had experienced some form of discrimination within the workplace. In response, BOPA is designing cultural competence and humility training to support members. The committee also wanted to understand whether inclusive care is provided to patients, and therefore they surveyed people of ethnic minority groups to understand their experience during cancer treatment. Dr Nabhani-Gebara discusses the results of these surveys and the implications for how health care professionals are trained. This interview took place at the 26th Annual BOPA Symposium in Newport, UK.
Technology has allowed for virtual appointments and smartphone apps have allowed patients with chronic conditions to receive advice, report side-effects and measure vital signs. Dr Nabhani-Gebara also discusses how artificial intelligence (AI) might be used to improve early diagnosis, such as by improving the sensitivity of chest X-rays used for detecting cancer.
