Professor Kay Peggs

About

I joined Kingston Universityin 2016. Previously I held positions at Warwick (Research Fellow in Sociology), Portsmouth (Reader in Sociology) and Winchester (Professor of Sociology and Animal Studies). After completing my PhD (Surrey) on women and pensions I worked on an ESRC-funded project on couple relationships.  My current research addresses the persistence of complex inequalities associated with species. I centre on how animals are central to the study of society. My publications on this theme include Animals and Sociology (Palgrave 2012). Forthcoming publications include Experiments, Animal Bodies and Human Values (Routledge) and the co-authored (Not) Consuming Animals: Ethics, Environment and Lifestyle Choices (Routledge), which is based on the research project I led on veganism and consumption. I am also a research methods specialist, have an MSc in Social Research Methods and am co-editor of two major four volume sets, Observation Methods (SAGE 2013) and Critical Social Research Ethics (SAGE 2018)

Teaching and learning

Research

Currently I am working 3 projects;

Veganism, ethics and lifestyle - which investigates perspectives on veganism.  Around 200 vegans participated in the study and a co-authored book (with Barry Smart and Joseph Burridge – Portsmouth University) ‘(Not) Consuming Animals: Environment, Ethics and Lifestyle Choices' (Routledge) is forthcoming.

A sole-authored book titled ‘Experiments, Animal Bodies and Human Values' (Routledge) that offers a critical sociological reflection on the ethics of using nonhuman animals in biomedical experiments. This book expands on my previous work, which has been published in a range of journals.

Sociology and animals - which seeks to show how the acceptance of nonhuman animals in sociology enhances the richness of the discipline.
