About

I am Professor of Strategic Management at 重口味SM. My research work focuses on environmental turbulence and the practices and techniques (e.g., scenario planning, technology roadmapping) that corporate managers and policy makers might use for coping with it. On these themes I worked with several national and regional governmental bodies in Italy and the EU, by contributing to elaborating, experimenting and transferring new foresight methodologies that helped decision makers to identify new critical technologies, settle their innovation priorities, design public procurement initiatives, and ultimately foster the competitiveness of local firms. In 2018 I secured a grant from Innovate UK within the Business Basics Fund Programme for my project "Technology foresight for growth and productivity: the design and implementation of a new foresight approach for UK SMEs". I am committed to transfer the output of my research and make a positive impact on students, business managers, and public decision makers.

Research

My research aims to explore how corporate organizations and public governmental bodies cope with the growing uncertainty of the business environment. It focuses on strategic decision-making processes, organizational change and adaptation, and strategic foresight, and explores approaches like scenario planning, Delphi, and roadmapping. I carried out field research on prominent European and US firms that have established a corporate foresight unit and examined the impact of their foresight efforts on their long term performance. The output of my research is published in leading academic journals and contributed to an impact case study for REF2021.

Business, knowledge transfer and international

I have been Principal Investigator or Co-Investigator for several research projects funded by the EU Commission and the national governments of Italy and UK aimed at developing, transferring, and applying new foresight methodologies in public governmental bodies, large companies, and SMEs. The aim of these projects was to help public organizations and companies to set their R&D and innovation priorities in a rational way, by optimizing the long term impact of their strategic investments.

Professional practice, knowledge exchange and impact

I have acted as consultant in the field of strategic foresight for major companies in Italy and the EU. My collaboration with Pirelli led to an action research-based paper I published in 2020 in R&D Management and an impact case study ("Product and Technology Roadmapping (TRM) at Pirelli") that was highly ranked in the REF2021. Senior managers at Pirelli learnt about my research work, which illustrated how successful companies have designed and used product and technology roadmapping (TRM) for coping with the increasing volatility of the business environment. We then started a cooperation which led to the co-design and co-creation of an innovative approach to TRM – an approach which was bespoke to the specific needs of this company.

I am the founder and leader of the research hub on Foresight, Creativity, and Decision-making of the Kingston Business School. The objective of this research hub is to bring together, under the common umbrella of decision making under uncertainty, the expertise and competences of the business school in all the related research areas of:

Strategic foresight, cognition and psychology of decision-making
Advanced quantitative modelling of financial valuation under uncertainty
Risk management in operations management and project management
Organisational creativity, innovation and user foresight
SMEs and entrepreneurship

I am a REF 21 & REF 27 Internal Review Panel member.

I have been Principal Investigator for several research projects funded by the EU Commission and the national governments of Italy, the EU, and UK.

I am responsible for all the modules of strategic management delivered to PG and MBA students at the Kingston Business School, involving around 10 occurrences and 600 students in UK, Russia, and Germany.
